Living in another city, travelling within Brazil or finding it difficult to get to an office can make an online appointment a useful option. You will meet with me, João Victor Bohn Alves, a specialist in Family and Community Medicine, to talk through your history, understand what is happening and plan the next steps together.

What we can discuss online

We can work through health questions, review your history and current treatments, discuss test results in context and plan follow-up care. Some initial assessments can also begin online. The appropriate type of appointment depends on what you need at the time.

Family medicine can also help bring information together when several treatments or professionals are involved in your care. If another type of assessment is needed, we will discuss it together.

When an in-person visit is needed

Online consultations have limits: they do not allow a complete physical examination and may not provide enough information for a safe decision. In those situations, care includes recommending an in-person assessment. If you need urgent medical attention, seek a local health service rather than waiting for an online appointment.

For long-term care, it is important to plan in-person consultations as well. Living far away does not remove that need; it should be part of the care plan from the start.

How the appointment works

The online consultation takes place through Doctoralia itself, at a scheduled time. No special preparation is needed. Access instructions are confirmed when booking; if you are in a different time zone, please also confirm the local appointment time.

Care in English or Portuguese

You can choose the language you feel most comfortable using to talk about your health. Online appointments may be suitable for Brazilians as well as international residents and visitors travelling within Brazil. Please mention your preference when booking.

Questions about online appointments

Can I book if I live outside Rio?

Yes. Online appointments are available to people in other cities and states across Brazil, in English or Portuguese. Please tell me where you will be during the consultation. We will consider whether your needs can be assessed remotely and how to arrange any in-person care.

Can my first appointment be online?

It can, when a remote assessment is appropriate. You do not need to have seen me before. If the available information is insufficient or a physical examination is needed, an in-person assessment may be necessary to complete the consultation.

Can all follow-up appointments be online?

Not always. The appropriate type of appointment depends on your clinical needs and may change over time. For chronic conditions or long-term care, Brazilian Federal Council of Medicine rules require an in-person consultation with the treating physician at intervals of no more than 180 days. We need to discuss how to arrange that care, especially if you live far away.

Can I receive prescriptions, test requests or medical certificates?

The need for each document is assessed during the consultation, according to your clinical situation and the applicable rules. Booking an appointment does not guarantee a prescription, test request or medical certificate. Some documents or treatments may require an in-person assessment.

Can I book while outside Brazil?

This service is offered to people who are in Brazil at the time of the appointment. If you will be in another country, please ask before booking: whether care can be provided and whether medical documents are valid also depend on local rules, regardless of your nationality.

How do I book?

Get in touch through WhatsApp during business hours or check the Doctoralia calendar. The online consultation takes place through Doctoralia itself. Say that you would like an online appointment, your preferred language and the city where you will be. Appointment details and access instructions are confirmed when booking.
